ONE paragraph synopsis of character and canon premise: Undertale is a video game where a human falls into the Underground, a world of monsters, and has to get through it to escape. On top of that, saving, loading, and resetting are actual concepts, and Undertale being a video game is a very big part of its canon; because the human can never permanently die, it leads to questions of how to behave with that kind of power. It turns out the monsters are actually pretty chill people, and you can get through the entire game without killing anyone! But you can also go wildly out of your way to murder literally every monster in the game and get a very different experience, which is where I'm bringing Sans from: he's from the path where every monster is killed and he has to fight the human. Sans is a lazy skeleton who loves his brother, good times, bad food, and worse jokes. He's a sentry in at least three different stations, one of which is an illegal hot dog stand, and he plays at comic relief almost the entire time... Except in the genocide route, which is where Sans happens to be from. There, from the point the human kills Sans's brother onward, he stalks the human through the Underground and fights them as the final boss (in the Judgment Hall, fittingly), because he actually knew all along that the human had the ability to reload and reset, and he knows that if the human finishes murdering every monster, all the timelines will end forever. As a result, Sans's humor is much darker, he's much angrier, much lonelier, and much more depressed... But he's still that funny skeleton, and the funny skeleton is all he wants people to see.

Character Personality:
laid-back
Sans prefers to keep things casual. He loves joking around; he meets Toriel because he's practicing knock-knock jokes on his own using the door to the ruins, and he harasses his brother with terrible puns regularly. Sans likes, as he says, "good food [and] bad laughs"; he's given up on a lot, but these can reliably be found wherever he goes. Sans often gets accused of being lazy, and while it's more complicated than that, he certainly likes taking the easy route when he can. He uses his multiple sentry stations as an excuse to take multiple breaks, even though he's often known for napping at his sentry stations. Life is a lot easier if you don't take it so seriously, you know?

extraverted
Sans is a people person. Everyone knows Sans, and Sans knows everybody. He's a regular at Grillby's, the local Snowdin bar, but even the first time he showed up he sat down and asked for "the usual". He's made friends with everyone from the nervous royal scientist to the hermit ex-queen living in the ruins who most people don't even know is still alive. Getting close to Sans is a different story; he maintains friendly casual buddy status with most people around him, deftly navigating situations so he says much less about himself than he does about anything else. He loves talking up Papyrus to people; telling others how cool his brother is is one of his favorite topics. But even if Sans tries to maintain some detachment to most, he can't help it--he gets attached in spite of himself. Sans loves people. That royal scientist is one of his best friends who he's helping keep a horrible secret. That ex-queen is someone he got so close to he made a promise to her, something he hates doing. Even the anomaly, though Sans only hates them in this timeline, is someone he's capable of becoming friends with. He admits in his fight that he'd secretly thought the anomaly just needed friends.

intelligent
Sans is smarter than he acts. He has a pile of quantum physics books (which he keeps in a superposition with his joke books), a mysterious lab behind his house with an equally mysterious broken machine, and his conversations with Alphys imply that they met due to a mutual love of science. Papyrus says that Sans loves science fiction, especially when it's real, and that's true. Sans has a telescope underground, and while he uses it for pranks, he really does love the stars even if he can only love the idea of them here. When it comes to observational skills, he's razor sharp; he can identify the anomaly based on how they act alone. He can tell how many times he killed them just via their facial expressions, all the way up to twelve deaths. Sans prefers if others don't know about all this, but he's absolutely willing to use it to his advantage.

depressed
Sans knows about the world being stuck in a time loop at the whims of an anomalous human. He knows he already ended up somewhere far from his original home only to be stuck in even more chaos. As he says, it makes it hard to give it his all. "Why even try?" Sans covers up his depression beneath layers of casual relaxed attitude, and that attitude isn't completely false, but he does use it as a mask. Sans doesn't tell anybody about the world resetting over and over because he thinks it's pointless; they'll forget again anyway and just be upset until then. This is what contributes to his just watching the anomaly as they travel through the Underground. In most timelines he just attempts to joke around with them and judge them at the end in hopes they'll make better choices. It takes the literal end of the world before Sans will actually act directly against the anomaly.

angry
The core of Sans's depression in the genocide route is anger. His brother, who he cares about more than anyone else, has been killed. Almost everyone he knows has been killed. The world is going to end if nothing stops the anomaly. And Sans gets mean about it. He threatens them directly before they fight Papyrus. He tell them they should be burning in hell. If the anomaly does take Sans's fake mercy during their fight, he kills them immediately and tells them to get dunked on. Sans prefers flight to fight every time, but when cornered, he lashes out aggressively, and that still lingers even though the anomaly seems to have quit, because Sans isn't going to believe they've quit. He might never become fully convinced of that.

secretive
Take it from Papyrus, Sans "never tells anybody anything". He holds his secrets so close to his chest they might as well be inside it. Sans is a liar and a cheater and he tends to try to solve his problems on his own. It's less out of condescension toward others as it is thinking telling others is pointless. He's used to a world that resets over and over, so telling others about the existential problems facing the Underground just seems like a good way to upset them (and, as mentioned earlier, Sans likes people and tends not to want to upset the ones he likes). Information is the one thing he can have that the anomaly can't know about, so he guards it. It's definitely a bad habit; he doesn't even tell his brother even half of the things he gets up to, and it's certainly something Papyrus does right back. A bit of a bad family trait. Sans never tells anyone anything directly when he can approach it sideways and get more information than he gives out. This does also make him good at keeping others' secrets: he doesn't tell anyone about Alphys keeping a science experiment gone wrong in her basement, even if maybe (like a lot of his secrets) he should. This doesn't stop him from feeling bad about keeping so many secrets... But he doesn't feel bad enough to give them up, either.

Character History: No wiki links; try to be concise, please, and only include the details that are important to understanding how the character became who they are and how their environment shaped them.
Sans isn't from around here--which is to say, in some way he and his brother Papyrus aren't from Snowdin, or maybe the timeline they're in, or maybe the universe they're in. It's not made clear in canon, but for Sans's purposes the point is that he and his brother have been displaced, and Sans has tried very hard for a long time to get back, but has since given up on it. He keeps a picture of people he doesn't want to forget from there in his secret workshop behind his house. This is the first major loss Sans suffered. It contributes to his apathy; when there's a place you can't return to and a machine you can't fix no matter how smart you are, you have to give up and live where you are. He's very familiar with science, specifically quantum physics, astronomy, and timespace magics (which counts as science here), and there's plenty of evidence in his workshop and the way Papyrus is familiar with Sans's scientific inclinations that he used to be much more active and involved. He's still every bit as clever as he's always been, but he can't help but feel a sense of hopelessness in his attempts.

He's really smart, he knows he's really smart, and he still can't get back. Sometimes you just can't, so you have to give up and make the best of it, whatever that means. He's made friends where he is now--almost everyone is at least aware of Sans, and most are fond of him in a vague, friendly acquaintances way. And it's very intentional that, if you notice, nearly everyone knows him superficially.

Sans lives with his brother Papyrus in Snowdin, working as a sentry. With his ability to teleport, he actually mans multiple sentry stations in the Underground (or rather he seems to move one sentry station around with him to multiple places), though he also doubles one of the stations as an illegal hot dog stand. He also does stand-up at the MTT Resort sometimes. Basically, Sans is everywhere and knows just about everyone. He helps Alphys, the royal scientist, by bringing food for the amalgamates she has in the basement laboratory (basically melted together monsters from a science experiment gone horribly wrong) without telling anyone. He befriends Toriel, the ex-queen hidden away in the ruins, just by telling her knock knock jokes through a door. That friendship is so powerful he makes a promise to her not to harm the next human that comes out of the ruins.

This is a problem, because the human that comes out of the ruins is the anomaly--a being capable of reloading, resetting, and restarting the universe through Determination alone. Sans, who had also been a scientist back in the day, is aware of this and has been tracking the timespace distortions. But due to his sense of hopelessness over the situation and his promise to Toriel, he doesn't do anything immediately. Even though this human came out covered in dust--which is what monsters become when killed--Sans just watches. He watches as they systematically kill everyone between the ruins and Snowdin. He watches as they kill his brother, who offered them mercy. And from that point on, Sans's life shrinks to only watching this anomaly. He follows them through the entire Underground as they go out of their way to murder every single monster that doesn't hide away. Undyne falls after a vicious fight. Mettaton, for all he was given a new body, is destroyed in one strike. Sans sees the permanent end of his universe roaring up to greet him.

So finally, he does something. He meets the anomaly in the castle judgment hall. In other timelines, Sans would judge the anomaly for what they did in the Underground here. In this, the worst timeline, Sans fights them. He plays dirty, because nothing else is going to work. He hits them hard and fast with everything he has from the word go. He attacks them in the menu. He pretends to offer them mercy with the intent of getting a free killing blow if they accept. He wants to frustrate them into giving up. He wants them to reset, to bring everyone back, but if nothing else, he just wants them to go away. And here, Sans is successful. The anomaly--the player behind the screen--gives up. They quit. But this means they leave Sans in this universe where his brother and almost every other monster is dead.

Not much time has passed since then. Sans is still expecting the reload, expecting to return to the judgment hall to have to fight again without his memories of anything that's happened before, and the Underground is practically a tomb. He's left lonely and paranoid and hopeless, dealing with knowing he murdered someone and gaining LV (Level of Violence, your willingness to hurt others, gained by killing someone) with almost nothing to distract him. And then... He ends up somewhere else.

Physical Details: Sans in human form is 5ft tall with a stocky build. He has curly, unstyled hair and always at least a bit of scruff, giving off the impression of someone who just can't be bothered to keep up with shaving and hair care (or someone who is completely new to both of these things). Some of his word choices give off the impression of a New York City accent, though as Sans isn't human it's not a one-to-one match. Tends toward a lazy and casual pattern of talking, like everything is one big joke. If his tone isn't this, it will be noted.

Does this character use any disability aids? What are they and what is their purpose? The human images I use have glasses, but his skeleton form doesn't need them, so no.

Is the character bringing a pet? Describe them. N/A

Inventory upon arrival:

1. trombone
2. Papyrus's cape
3. pet rock

Suitability

What elements of the game are you most interested in engaging with?
I love horror games in general. The idea of being forced to fit in under penalty of torture is very interesting, and the Red Scare setting seems to lend itself very well to paranoia, too. Brainwashing seems very interesting to play with in particular, personally. I've always been interested in the contrast of these sorts of games; I played in Mayfield, too, back in the day, and We're Still Here much more recently. I want to follow the plot most of all; I've never been interested in sandbox games. Throwing Sans into horrific situations while also working through the storyline with everyone else is my overall goal.

How will your character integrate into the setting? How do you see them dealing with life in Sweetwater? What are your plans for them in this game?
I've picked a canon point that makes Sans more paranoid and wary than usual, and he was already pretty paranoid and wary. He'll do his best not to show it, but Sans is from the route of the game where basically everyone dies, so there's no way that won't come out in his behavior, even though he's generally good at hiding things. Sans will have to learn to exist in a human body without magic, which will be a struggle that he won't enjoy but I will. Sans will face a struggle between his natural extraverted, people-liking nature and the suspicion his canonpoint and the game both provide; that seems like fun to play out. He'll want to make friends, but also not want to make friends. Sans will also be very interested in figuring out what's going on and how to leave. His canonpoint at home isn't great but he doesn't want to be stuck as a human in a horrible 1960s town either, you know? He'll definitely want to investigate. Overall, Sans will try to present a casual, under the radar front while running around in the background trying to figure things out and get involved. He'll want to stay as under the radar as possible to the town and everyone else, both to avoid trouble and so nobody starts expecting things out of him, but it's in his nature to be doing a lot more work than you'd think behind the scenes.

Why did you choose this character specifically for this game?
Sans, especially at the canon point I chose for him, is secretive, paranoid, and tries to blend in already. A big part of his characterization is acting one way while having a bunch of secrets, and that seems to fit very well here. He's used to being trapped and living with constant levels of fear from an other. At home it was humans who trapped the monsters underground, and in Sweetwater it's an unknown thing keeping them all in town and fear of nuclear annihilation, but the feeling will be much the same. Sans is usually good at blending in, though he's also one for toeing the rules to test them out, which is going to make for some interesting consequences. He also already tries to gather information and solve things behind the scenes, so that should fit well in a place like this.

What are your favorite elements of horror? I love psychological horror and characters having their personalities warped, be it the fast, temporary adjustments of an event or the slow-burn of something longer-lasting. Existential horror is a lot of fun--I favor time loops and other meta kinds of horror, fittingly for picking an Undertale character, though I also like things like Higurashi, Umineko, and Slay the Princess. I also enjoy playing with more visceral, physical horror. I love horror surgery events, transformations, and playing around with gore within a few specific limits. In general I love how horror stretches how a character acts and what they do; I'll try out pretty much anything at least once.

Do you understand that Silent Spring's purpose is horror, not domesticity/found family, and that the following themes (nuclear panic, the Red Scare, conformism, sexism and restrictive gender roles, heteronormativity/gender binarism, surveillance, gaslighting, brainwashing/propaganda, disinformation, pollution/contamination, poisoning, loss of control, smoking, alcohol culture, and uncanny valley) cannot be opted out of? Yes!

Do you agree to accept the potential IC consequences (social shunning/ostracism, potential exclusion from neighborhood social events, up to brainwashing, sleep deprivation torture, and nonconsensual haloperidol injection) in full for your character's actions in game? Yes. I am looking forward to them, actually.

Housing Preferences

What is your usual tagging speed? Tagging patterns? I try to tag at a regular pace and boomerang when I can, though there are occasionally a few days, depending on my varying work schedule or other similar real life things, where I can't tag.
What activity level is ideal to you in a partner? Ideally I'd like to be able to boomerang with them sometimes (I absolutely do not expect that regularly), but as long as there's general consistency of a few times a week and they're willing to OOCly plot out things as necessary I'm fine.
What is your timezone? How important is it that the other players in the household be in a similar timezone? My time zone is EST. It's not that important to me that they're in similar time zones; my sleep schedule varies and I'm often up at night.
Would you like a household with a child, without, or do you have no preference? I would prefer a household with a child, but if you can't swing it, it's cool.
Are you okay with being placed with a character/character(s) that would impact your character's reputation? Absolutely
